7DRUMCITY'S FLASHBAND SHOWCASE
For this PBS WETA Arts episode featuring emerging band Death Club 7, I served as one of many Directors of Photography documenting their journey from formation to sold-out performance. Working in the intimate yet crowded Pearl Street Warehouse, I employed a dual-camera strategy—positioning a Sony FX9 with G Master 28-135mm servo zoom for locked-off stage coverage while actively maneuvering through the venue with a gimbal-mounted FX3 and 24-70mm f2.8. This approach allowed me to capture both consistent wide coverage and dynamic close-ups of performers and audience reactions. With all-access credentials, I navigated between backstage, loading docks, performance pit, and audience areas to document the complete performance experience. Shooting in log color space preserved detail amid unpredictable stage lighting, while my gimbal work delivered cinematic movement that complemented the grunge-soul-EDM fusion energy. The production extended beyond performance coverage to include impromptu nighttime interviews outside the venue, where I balanced ambient light with minimal supplemental lighting to maintain the authentic atmosphere while ensuring subject visibility. Despite the physical demands of operating a gimbal rig for 5+ hours and the challenge of improvising coverage without a structured shot list, the resulting footage successfully captured the raw energy and community spirit of DC's vibrant music scene for broadcast television.
